A 103-year-old war veteran and resident at our Lifestyle Care home, Eastside Gardens Care Home, has formed a remarkable new connection after news of her wartime service reached a history enthusiast in the United States.
Molly Gillon, from Wallsend, played a vital role during the Second World War, using radar signals to detect enemy aircraft and hazards, and guiding RAF pilots safely to land under the cover of darkness during the wartime blackout.
And when the RAF turned out to celebrate her 103rd birthday at the Eastside Gardens care home in January, the former radar operator’s story spread across the Atlantic to Melinda Heinritz 3,730 miles away in Wisconsin.
