PIZZA DOUGH CO TURNS 5!

One of Newcastle’s most popular pizza restaurants is celebrating a birthday this spring (May) – and has a special, golden gift for customers.

It is five years in May since Pizza Dough Co, at Gosforth’s Three Mile, opened its doors, during which time it has become a firm favourite with families.

It is also one of the area’s most popular children’s party destinations as it incorporates The Playhouse; a multi-activity, jungle-themed soft play centre, where

children can tackle a variety of safe and structured obstacles in inter-connected zones, always within sight of their parents or guardians.

And, to celebrate its fifth birthday, throughout May chefs will be concealing five golden tickets within their pizzas.

The tickets will entitle any lucky customer to one of a trio of Three Mile related prizes, including free pizza for a whole year at Pizza Dough Co.

ARMY HONOURS FORMER SOLDIER ON HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY…

A former soldier – who was hit by two childhood tragedies – received a special surprise on his 100th birthday.

Among the guests at Ronald Clayton’s party – at Eastside Gardens Care Home, Wallsend, on April 23 – were members of his former regiment, the Royal Artillery – who joined his family, friends and other dignitaries to celebrate, not just his centenary, but also his commitment to the army, which was forged when he was just a boy.

Ronald was born on 23 April 1926 and lived in Walker, Newcastle with his parents until tragedy struck. Ronald was taken in by his auntie Anne and uncle Jim, and their four daughters – Audrey, Belle, Irene and Gladys, but as soon as turned 16 he was determined to join the army.

LEISURE VENUES SHOUT UP! TO STOP SEXUAL HARASSMENT…

A group of leading pubs and hotels in Tyneside have joined together in a bid to fight the scourge of sexual harassment.

The Grey Street Hotel, The Albatross backpackers’ hostel and The Duke of Northumberland – known as The Clock – in Newcastle city centre, along with Gosforth’s Three Mile and Great North Hotel, have all signed up to a scheme called Shout-Up!

And staff at all venues are now fully trained to look out for – and address – any sign of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Shout Up! – delivered by Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland and funded by Newcastle City Council – educates those working in the nighttime economy about the impact sexual harassment and assault has on people, reputation and staff motivation.

Eastside Gardens Resident Molly makes a transatlantic special relationship

A 103-year-old war veteran and resident at our Lifestyle Care home, Eastside Gardens Care Home, has formed a remarkable new connection after news of her wartime service reached a history enthusiast in the United States.

Molly Gillon, from Wallsend, played a vital role during the Second World War, using radar signals to detect enemy aircraft and hazards, and guiding RAF pilots safely to land under the cover of darkness during the wartime blackout.

And when the RAF turned out to celebrate her 103rd birthday at the Eastside Gardens care home in January, the former radar operator’s story spread across the Atlantic to Melinda Heinritz 3,730 miles away in Wisconsin.

Staff at The Runhead in Ryton to cycle 24-hour fundraiser

The team at The Runhead in Ryton, Tyne Valley, will take on a 24-hour bikeathon beginning at 2pm on Wednesday, February 18, with the goal of raising at least £1,000 for Children’s Cancer North.

Mark Johnson, business manager at The Runhead and a member of the cycling team, said: “A couple of us are keen cyclists, but even so, it is quite a challenge to cycle for 24 hours non-stop.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Inline Fitness Centre, at Blaydon, which has lent us the bikes free of charge.

“Now, we just need to give it our best shot and hopefully raise as much as possible for a really good cause.”

The fundraiser will see staff take turns cycling continuously on two static spin bikes in the bar for a full 24 hours, ending at 2pm on Thursday, February 19

Eastside Gardens Resident and North East RAF Hero Celebrates 103rd Birthday

At Eastside Gardens Lifestyle Care Home, a remarkable Tyneside RAF hero has celebrated her 103rd birthday. Molly Gillon, of Howdon, joined the Royal Air Force as a radar operator at just 18, following the tragic loss of her brother Tom, who was killed in action as an airman. Over the years, Molly played a crucial role in helping British planes return safely during the Second World War – a job she recalls as both vital and, at times, heartbreaking.

This year, Molly marked her milestone birthday surrounded by serving and retired RAF personnel, sharing memories of her extraordinary wartime service.
